Tips for Upping Your Water Intake
Fun fact: the human body is about 75% water. Which means it’s a crucial part of your health! In our last post we covered some of the many healthy benefits of drinking enough water, including helping your kidneys and muscles function, promoting weight loss, improving skin complexion and so much more.
However, most of us don’t drink as much water during the day as we should. Building new healthy habits can be difficult, so if you need to up your water intake, here are a few tips to help.
Keep a record
Whether you use an app or just mark it in a notebook, keep track of how much water you drink throughout the day. Not only does it provide a visual reminder, but you’ll also be able to easily see if you’ve fallen behind and need to pick up the water pace.
Get a water bottle with measurements
There are also plenty of water bottles out there with time and volume measurements to help you stay on track. This half gallon one has been making the rounds on TikTok.
If you don’t like plain water, or just get tired of it, try adding some flavor. You can try different fresh fruit infusions, like lemon, cucumber, basil or orange. Or if you need something quick, look at your grocery store for flavor packets or drops. Just be sure and check the sugar amount in the nutrition facts.
Add water to your schedule
Try to attach drinking a glass of water to routine activities you already do every day. A glass at mealtimes is an obvious example, but you could also have one first thing when you wake up, or fill up your cup right before your daily 9:30 AM standup.
Take water on the go
It can be so easy to go an hour or two without drinking any water if you are out and about running errands. Bring a bottle on the go and it will be right there with you reminding you to drink while you are busy getting stuff done.
Drink when hungry
Sometimes when our bodies are thirsty it can feel the same as hunger. But before you reach for a snack, try drinking a glass of water instead. If the hunger goes away, you really were just thirsty. If it persists, then it’s time to grab that healthy snack.
Drink extra when exercising
Your body loses a ton of water through sweat when working out. Make sure to drink some 20-30 minutes before you exercise, then drink water throughout your workout, and have another glass when done.
Just remember babes, creating new habits is a process. So just take it day by day and build up that water consumption as you go!
